Did you know that the Bible tells us that we are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in us? (I Corinthians 3:16)
If you have ever read the Old Testament you realize that the rules governing what went on in the Temple that was built in Jerusalem were carefully laid out and strictly adhered to.

In fact, when the rules were not adhered to carefully people died. Some people look at that and think God is mean and arbitrary. On the contrary, God is good and He is holy. The problem is not God, it's sin. God is HOLY and He is a consuming fire. Being in God's presence brings the power of holiness to bear on anyone in His presence. That's why the High Priest only went in to the Holy of Holies once a year and only after going through extensive preparation.
When the High Priest went in before God's presence he could not have any sin in his life or he would drop dead. Sin and darkness cannot exist in the presence of light and holiness. It's not God being mean it's God being who He is - GOD.
The power of holiness is a truth that has been mostly lost in the modern church, but it will make a sure and solid come back before Jesus returns. How do I know that? Because the Bible tells us that Jesus is coming for a "spotless" bride. Jesus is not coming for a lazy, feckless, worldly church, but for a people who are set apart for Him and living holy lives.
If you read the passage of scripture in I Corinthians 3 that I started out with, you will see that holiness is not just a personal thing but also involves the way we deal with each other. The divisions in the church today are reflective of spiritual lack.
I John 1:7 tells us that if we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Sin is darkness. Sin is uncleanness.
So how do we do the impossible and live holy lives in the light of God? It all starts with a decision.
I choose to live as God wants over what I want. I choose to forgive those who have hurt and offended me. I choose to pray for the church, the government, and all men (and women). I choose that insomuch as it depends on me to live at peace with all men. I know there are times that is not possible. Some people will not allow you to live at peace with them, especially if they are living selfish, sinful lives. They resent you for even the desire to live a holy life. But insomuch as it depends on YOU, you choose to live at peace.
We are the temple of the Holy Spirit of the living God. We are laborers together with God. Once we choose to accept these things and pursue them with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, God will work in us to will and to do of His good pleasure and help us walk the walk of this journey. You will never walk a step alone. And you will find the realm of true blessing and true peace.
